Bush told to plan for Chávez oil shock

Richard Lugar, chairman of the US Senate foreign relations committee, has urged the Bush administration to adopt specific "contingency plans" for a potential disruption to oil supplies from Venezuela.

In a letter sent to Condoleezza Rice, secretary of state, last Friday, a copy of which has been obtained by the Financial Times, Mr Lugar warned the US that it needed to "abandon" reliance on a "passive approach" to energy diplomacy.

And in other words to adopt a direct and aggressive approach (=military action) to energy diplomacy.

No wonder Chavez has chosen to upgrade Venezuela's military with newer rifles and better helicopters and aircraft.

Ethiopian troops enter central Somalia

Hundreds of Ethiopian troops in armored vehicles rolled into Somalia on Thursday to protect their allies in this country’s virtually powerless government from Islamic militants who control the capital.

The move could give the U.S.-backed Somali government its only chance of curbing the Islamic militia’s increasing power. But Ethiopia’s incursion could also be just the provocation the militia needs to build public support for a guerrilla war.

A hell of a dirty game of geopolitics...sad to see the world going down the drain.

On another note, Germany just sent 800 troops to the Democratic Republic of Congo., to "make sure the presidential race runs smoothly", i.e., to protect European interests in Africa. (Interestingly enough this decision came *after* Merkel came to power...)

Sad to see Europe returning to Neo-Colonialism. These actions prove that the EU is not much different from the U.S. In fact, both are marching hand in hand on the geopolitical stage. I will write on this subject more when I have more time.
